Description
The Via del Sale is one of the many pearls of Cuneo and its Alps for tourists or travellers seeking the unspoiled, pure and vibrant natural setting of the high mountains.
This road has linked the mountains to the sea since ancient times, and was used by travellers, traders, shepherds, pilgrims and mule drivers for years to trade salt from Liguria (used to preserve meat, fish and olives) and Piedmontese agricultural products. Today it has been restructured and affords everyone a chance to experience the beauty of this wild, continuously changing territory, featuring the alpine pastures, the Carsene, and landscape that gradually becomes maritime. The road is only passable in summer when it is open and leads on a dirt road from Colle di Tenda to any town on the Riviera di Ponente up to the Côte d'Azur.
Schedule
Day 1
We ride all the way round the crest of the Italian-French border, pedalling at an altitude of 2,000 metres on gentle slopes and easy descents to the Rifugio Don Barbera. Our trail is a beautiful dirt road built during the great wars by Italian soldiers, but never used for war purposes, immersed in breathtaking views of the highest peaks of the southern Alps, larch pine forests and vegetation that unites alpine and mainly sea-dwelling species.

- Option of transfer by minibus ON REQUEST from Limone to Chalet Le Marmotte or from Cuneo to Chalet Le Marmotte.
