*The 1st cross-border Alpine Tunnel in the history of the Alps. It connects the municipalities of Crissolo in Italy with Ristolas in France; it is located on the slopes of Mount Granero, under the slope that separates the Po valley from the French valley of Queyras.
The idea for the Monte Viso Tunnel dates back to 1475, when Ludovico II, Marquis of Saluzzo, decided to secure an outlet to the sea to facilitate trade, mainly the salt trade, which at the time was essential for preserving food. The tunnel, over 75 m long and 2 m high, was built between 1475 and 1480, to allow easier passage for mule caravans. The work ensured fast access to Provence, avoided paying taxes to the Duchy of Savoy and the Dauphiné and without having to cross the Col de la Traversette pass, only slightly higher but the cause of many accidents due to its exposed and slippery terrain. A veritable trade route was formed thanks to the Monte Viso Tunnel: the "Via del Sale", or salt road. Over the centuries the tunnel has been closed and reopened many times due to landslides and/or human activities. The entrance was narrowed in 1900, with only one man being able to pass towards France, until restoration work completed in the summer of 2014 returned the first tunnel in the Alps to its original dimensions and to good safety conditions.
