Description

The province of Alessandria will be star of Giro d'Italia 2023 thanks to the arrival stage in Tortona on 17 May. The pink caravan will also transit through Voltaggio, Gavi, Serravalle Scrivia, Cassano Spinola and Villalvernia.

The area of Alessandria has a natural vocation for cycling, thanks to Novi Ligure, the city of Coppi and Girardengo to whom is dedicated the largest European museum on bicycle history and legends. The roads which were natural training ground for the first two Champions of the cycling era chase one another other between plains and hills with up and down stretches and breathtaking scenery. By bicycle, you can encounter crystal-clear rivers, woods full of wild fauna, golf courses and equipped sports centres. In a moment, you move from castles, medieval fortresses, Roman settlements to modern shopping centres such as the Outlet of Serravalle Scrivia, to merge history and culture with shopping.

On this itinerary we will discover the mythical roads and an authentic territory rich in artistic and culinary excellence.

DAY 1
Arrival in 18th century residence on the outskirts of Novi Ligure. Tour of the gardens, vineyards and winery with tasting. In the afternoon, visit Museo dei Campionissimi, the largest European 

cycling museum housed in an industrial building of the early 20th century next to the city centre. Dedicated to the great champions Fausto Coppi and Costante Girardengo, who lived most of their life in the city of Novi Ligure: besides memorabilia, the multimedia totems and short films will take the visitor on a journey through cycling history. Followed by walk in the historic centre of Novi characterised by facades painted with tromp l'oeil drawings and stuccos according to the use introduced by Genoese families who reigned here in the 17th century. Dinner in osteria with farinata, a thin chickpea pancake cooked in a wood-burning oven and very popular in Liguria and areas bordering with Piedmont. Overnight accommodation in historic residence/wine estate on the outskirts of Novi Ligure.

DAY 2
After breakfast, full day itinerary by e-bike (or with road bikes for more expert cyclists): Novi-Castellania Coppi - Novi along the road that takes to the birthplace of Fausto Coppi. 

Itinerary: Novi Ligure - Merella – Villalvernia – Spineto – Villaromagnano – Costa Vescovado – Montale Celli – Castellania Coppi – Sant’Agata Fossili – Cassano – Novi Ligure. In Castellania Coppi, everything speaks and tells of the Piedmont champion. Even the walls and frescoes with giant vintage photographs and photos, the memorabilia, which can be seen in Casa Coppi or in the small, dedicated museum. There is also the Mausoleum of the great Fausto: the Monument in honour of the Coppi brothers is the destination of continuous pilgrimages. 
For "virtuous" cyclists it is possible to cycle the "Rampina", a climb of approximately 3 km on gravel roads which are the undisputed protagonists of LA MITICA historic cycle race run every year, starting and arriving in Castellania Coppi. 
Lunch break in equipped picnic area at a farm in Costa Vescovato with organic specialties from the farm’s shop such as salami, Montebore cheese, fruit/vegetables, all accompanied by Derthona Timorasso, princely wine of the area. Alternatively, possibility to lunch in the farm’s restaurant (on request and with payment of an additional charge). 
Return to the wine estate in Novi and dinner in the restaurant on-site with local menu.

 

DAY 3
After breakfast transfer by own means to Tortona: Visit the Art Gallery
of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona - Divisionism. The entire collection of the works is focused on the painting movement of the last decade of the 19th century and the focus is on the works of Pellizza da Volpedo and Angelo Bararbino.
Transfer to Volpedo, one of the most beautiful villages of Italy and birthplace of the painter Giuseppe Pellizza. It is possible to visit his home and study transformed into a museum. Many of the works are set in the village, and this has led to the realisation of a 10-stage route along which it is possible to compare the environment with the reproductions of the Maestro's paintings. 
Lunch at leisure and end of services.
