Temporarily closed The origin of the civic museum of Alessandria dates back to 1854 when a local solicitor, Antonio Maria Viecha, donated his collection of paintings, sketches and drawings by the painter Giovanni Migliara, to the people of Alessandria. In the rooms of the 18th century Palazzo Cuttica, visitors can enjoy the Paths of the Civic Museum with a selection of works from the civic collections. Of special importance is the archaeological collection of Cesare Di Negro Carpani, a collector and scholar from the 1800s. There are more than 1,000 exhibits, where finds from an early Christian burial site are on display alongside funeral items from Ligurian tombs together with various domestic items; this collection is also an excellent example of a private collection from the 1800s. One room is dedicated to paintings from the 1500s and 1600s with many important examples of sacred art from Piedmont, Lombardy and northern Italy; the Tapestry Room has two precious Flemish tapestries from the end of the 17th century; the Napoleonic room is devoted to the French general who won the Battle of Marengo on the outskirts of Alessandria in June 1800. The Choral Manuscript and Vestment Room dedicated to the Dominican, Saint Pius V, exhibits the sacred vestments and precious illuminated choral manuscripts, commissioned by the same Pope Ghislieri, the only Pope to come from Piedmont. The Ancient and Modern Print Room is home to a range of age-old and Napoleonic collections as well as a selection of more contemporary works donated by important artists whose works have been exhibited here during temporary exhibitions.
