Museo Paleontologico Territoriale dell'Astigiano

Pictures (1)

The Museum is housed in "Palazzo del Michelerio", originally a mid-16th century monastery and currently owned by Azienda Territoriale della Casa di Asti. The Museum includes a first collection of skeletal remains cetacean fossils from the area of Asti, both mysticetes (whales) and odontocetes (dolphins), dating from the Pliocene Era (between 5 and 2 million years ago) when the entire Po Plain was occupied by the sea. Some of these finds are very important, for example the Fin Whale of Valmontasca (Vigliano d'Asti), the Whale of Portocomaro, the "Tersilla" Whale of S. Marzanotto d'Asti and the oceanic dolphins of Belangero and Settime. A second collection, on the mezzanine floor, handles general paleontology and that of the territory describing the geological periods between the Miocene and the Pliocene Era, with an overview of the geological events of the last 25 million years.
