Highlights and tour details
From the station of Re you can go directly down to cross the bike path and take the bridge over the Melezzo stream. A slightly longer walk is recommended, however, with an ascent to the centre of Re where there is the Mariano Sanctuary. Continue for a short stretch on the carriage road and immediately after the junction for Folsogno turn right towards the cycle path that soon leads to the spectacular gorge of Pozzomaglione with a beautiful stone bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right along the cycle path until you reach another bridge over the Melezzo which takes you back to the right bank. Continue along the cycle path and you will reach the bridge over the Melezzo where the direct route from the train station also arrives. Beyond the bridge you take the M18 path that goes up to Pian dei Sali (WWF Oasis) where there is the carriage road that you follow until Finero. From Finero follow the carriage road as far as Creves and, at the entrance of the tunnel, take the old road on the right (closed to cars) which leads to the monument in memory of the massacre of 12 October 1944 in which the partisan commanders Alfredo Di Dio and Attilio Moneta lost their lives. Continue until you cross the outlet of the tunnel, then continue on the carriage road until you reach the junction for Cursolo (municipal hostel) which you follow as far as the town centre. From Cursolo you take a beautiful mule track equipped with explanatory panels to reach Orasso and Hotel Belvedere, a stop-off place.
Points of interest
The route connects the Sanctuary of Re in Val Vigezzo, devoted to the Virgin Mary, with the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Pietà in Cannobio. It crosses the wild Valle Cannobina: a few hundred inhabitants divided between 5 municipalities. The particularly fascinating territory of Valle Cannobina still preserves the unspoilt appearance of the past. The landscape is marked by the testimonies of traditional rural life, based on subsistence farming. The villages are characterised by unexpected views, ancient houses with votive paintings on the façades, small squares, rustic stone fountains, which can be discovered by walking along the narrow pedestrian streets. Some panoramic viewpoints allow you to look towards the other side of the valley with the wild mountains of the Valgrande National Park. In Traffiume, before Cannobio, the Cannobino stream has dug a spectacular gorge, the Orrido di Sant'Anna. Cannobio is the last town on the Piedmontese shores of Lake Maggiore before the Swiss border. Because of its geographical position, it was an important strategic and commercial junction that is still well represented today by the presence of numerous XVII-XIX century buildings that overlook the cobbled streets of the old town centre, such as the sixteenth century residences of Palazzo Omacini and Palazzo Pironi.
