Glorioso Rimpatrio dei Valdesi: Stage 2 Frazione San Giacomo - Rifugio Daniele Arlaud

da Giaglione a Salbertrand (22,39 km)
Highlights and tour details

From the hamlet of San Giacomo, take the trail that takes to the village of Tiraculo in three quarters of an hour. From there, continue to Grange Thullie always on the trail, through a wood first of chestnuts and then of conifers; in another two hours you are in Grange Thullie. At the junction, turn left for the Quattro Denti (Sentiero Balcone), a peak that you reach in half an hour. Immediately below Cima Quattro Denti, ignoring all the trails that take towards the valley, continue half way up the slope and keeping to the right you reach the Pertus di Colombano Romean (hydraulics works of 1533). Continue along the narrow trail that crosses a larch wood at high altitude with lovely views of the Fort of Exilles, Salbertrand and the Oulx basin, dominated by Mount Chaberton, always continuing in the same direction as far as the Alpeggio of Clot Brun. At this point, the trail ends and you take the dirt road that heads towards the valley, barred a little further on with rudimentary fence. Arrived at the hairpin bend below, continue on a trail into the wood. Cross a first stream and then a second. The trail ends a little further on and you continue on a cart track on grassy ground that begins close to Grange della Valle. Cross the village among the houses, going past two fountains and exiting in front of a church. Continue on the dirt road that climbs from S. Colombano towards the bridge over the Rio di Galambara that takes the name of the homonymous valley. To the right, passing in front of the Colonia Alpina Viberti, along the dirt road you reach the Levi Molinari Refuge in a few minutes. To the left, the dirt road becomes a paved road in the direction of Eclause. This long stage can be interrupted here, overnighting at the Levi Molinari Refuge. In this case, you would reach Montagne Seu at the Arlaud Refuge, splitting the stage in two and lengthening the itinerary by a day. If you continue, instead of climbing to the right to the refuge, you cross the Galambra torrent on the paved road; after 200 metres, in front of an open space, take the trail to the left for Soullier, Margaria, Combes. The trail that follows the water pipe becomes a dirt road. Pass under Alp Soullier, and neglecting two detours for upper Margaria head towards strada Combes (Via Alpina – Sentiero Balcone). Exit the wood, travel a section of mule track bordered by stone walls and start a steep descent towards Combes. Pass among the stone houses of Combes until you meet the GTA. At the fountain of Combes turn right and go up the GTA by approximately 150 metres to arrive in Eclause. Having crossed the village you meet the road that originates from Grange della Valle and continue on the GTA-Via Alpina trail.Salbertrand and Gran Bosco appear. Having reached upper Moncellier, cross the paved road of Pramand and reach lower Moncellier always walking along the old mule track to reach the piazza of the church of Salbertrand (1038 m asl); from here, descend to cross state road 24 with an underpass, then turn on the first road to the right which with a single bridge crosses both the railway and the Dora. Immediately after the bridge, turn right following a dirt road which goes along the Dora, pass between a playground to the right and a sports ground to the left. Continue under a viaduct of the A32 motorway until on the right you reach the bridge over the Dora called delle Chenebries after 600 metres. At this point, turn left and after a few metres you meet the Cippo and a noticeboard that recalls the battle against the French to cross the bridge, which determined the success of the whole enterprise. The road winds uphill for about 500 metres until it reaches another dirt road that comes from Salbertrand, where you turn left crossing a wooden bridge over the torrent called “Rio delle Gorge”. After 50 metres to the right, you are at the starting point of the GTA trail that with an altitude difference of 750 metres takes to Montagne Seu crossing the Grange d’Himbert.

Points of interest

The Alpine pasture of Grange Thullie, used even if in ruins: the trou of Thuille, underground channel of which you can see a hole in a wall, which takes water from the valley of Tiraculo to Val Susa; the top of the Quattro Denti (2024 m asl); the tunnel of Thullie, as soon as you have descended the Quattro Denti: designed and dug between 1526 and 1533 by Colombano Romean of Chiomonte, it is a tunnel-aqueduct which has brought fertility to an unproductive slope. The fort of Exilles that is seen from above, the lovely residential areas of Combes, pays d'oc, Eclause (late-gothic bell tower, a window in stone carved on the square of the fountain), Salbertrand with late-gothic parish Church of San Giovanni Battista (11th -14th century).
