Giro del Marguareis: Tappa 1 Pian delle Gorre - Rifugio Garelli

da a (7,26 km)
Highlights and tour details

From Pian delle Gorre (1032 m), seat of the homonymous refuge, take the dirt road which is closed to traffic and goes inside the wood in the Saut Valley (del Salto), in a south-east direction. Continue until to the left you take the trail (pole) for Pian del Creus. Climb steeply into the Seprentera Valley inside the wood as far as the clearing of Pian del Creus (1279 m, 45 minutes from Pian delle Gorre). Neglect the junction to the right for the Gias sottano di Sestrera and continue straight on for Gias Madonna, crossing the clearing alongside the stream. Passed the stream over the bridge, resume the climb on hairpin bends on a steep ridge in the wood. You exit the wood at the foot of a grassy hump which you climb to the top, where Gias Madonna stands (1652 m, 1 hour and 10 minutes from Pian del Creus). Continue to the right for Gias soprano di Sestrera, descending from the grassy hump. Re-enter the wood and descend to the impluvium of Comba Comune. Having crossed several rios, with a steep traverse stepped on rocky slopes, you regain the lost altitude. After a long halfway slope (ignore the junction to the left for Giaset) you reach Gias della Costa. Cross it uphill, going past the large watershed that separates the Serpentera Valley from the Sestrara Valley and you reach the large grazing plateau seat of Gias soprano di Sestrera (1847 m, 1 hour and 25 minutes from Gias Madonna, fountain). Here you enter the trail coming from Pian delle Gorre and turn left, going back up the last hundred or so metres of altitude difference which separates from the above Garelli Refuge (1966 m, 20 minutes from Gias soprana di Sestrera)..
