Alta Via Canavesana (AVC)

Pont Canavese (150,00 km)
Highlights and tour details

The idea of the Alta Via Canavese was born from the Canavese sections of the Italian Alpine Club (Rivarolo Canavese, Forno Canavese and the Sparone subsection). The route, divided into 13 stages, begins and ends in Pont Canavese, touching Val Gallenca, the Tesso and Malone valleys, the Orco and Soana Valleys and Valle Sacra. A connecting stretch was proposed, which leads from Forno Canavese (historical departure point of the itinerary) to Monte Soglio, joining the main route of the itinerary.

There are many attractions and extraordinary elements to be encountered along the route. From a naturalistic point of view, from Ceresole Reale to the Soana valley, the AVC passes through the extraordinary environmental context of the Piedmontese side of the Gran Paradiso National Park, also crossing stretches of the Royal Hunting Roads built by Vittorio Emanuele II. On the AVC there is a series of sanctuaries that have hosted miraculous events (the Milani in Forno, Prascondù in Ribordone), magical places such as the Piani delle masche, enchanted villages, votive shrines and ancient parish churches (Santa Elisabetta, Santa Maria di Doblazio). In Ceresole Reale you can visit the historical mountaineering and tourism places in Canavese. The flora and fauna, also outside the Park area, offer extraordinary close encounters with birds of prey, ibexes and chamois, marmots, grazing herds, alpine flowers and expanses of cottongrass, woods and green pastures. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramas of the AVC: glacial lakes and imposing hydroelectric reservoirs, rock walls, 3000-metre peaks and the 4000-metre Gran Paradiso, valleys and passes.

The overall route includes more than thirteen thousand metres difference in height on ascent. It is a hiking route, although some steep sections are demanding and require great attention. Only a few of the initial stages do not offer the possibility of an overnight stay in a bivouac or refuge, so you need a sleeping bag and tent. The itinerary has been marked in red and white.
