Highlights and tour details
Departing from the hills of Belveglio you proceed southwards for approximately 7 km and climbing up, you arrive in the territories Vinchio, at 261 metres a.s.l., famous for wine production and for the numerous events linked to it. The centre is of considerable importance as it is the intersection of three roads of Roman origin (Ramaudio, Luparia and Fonsmagna). The mainly hilly territory is famous for the cultivation of both white and red grapes. The natural area of Val Sarmassa is also of considerable importance. The area itself contains palaeontological and naturalistic values that are characteristics of the Asti area, besides being very important from a landscape and historical-literary point of view. In fact, many of the stories told by Davide Lajolo, a journalist and writer born in Vinchio, are set in these areas. You then cross the territory of the municipality of Vinchio, whose first historical evidence dates back to 948 A.D., and then continue towards the hamlet of Noche for about 3.5 km. From the hamlet of Noche it is possible to walk along the 3A variant that leads to San Marzano Oliveto. The stage then goes towards its end continuing for about 6.5 km, arriving in the old town centre of Castelnuovo Calcea. The name derives from the name 'Castrum Novum' (new camp), while Calcea from 'ad calcarias' (tamped road), which could be the Roman road that often required tamping. After the Gauls and the Celts, the Longobards and the Franks dominated the lands where Castelnuovo stands. It was part of the Duchy of Milan before being ceded to the House of Savoy in 1735. The village is in a panoramic position, from where you can admire the countless hills cultivated with vineyards that provide some of the most renowned products of the territory: Barbera, Grignolino, Cortese and Dolcetto.
