Discovering the Via Francigena
In the land of the Escartons
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
Description
In the wake of the success of the Camino de Santiago, other historical-religious itineraries have become popular. The Via Francigena that crosses the land of the Escartons is one of these.
This area has always been a place of transit for many people: soldiers, traders, clergymen, migrants. Our journey will take us in pursuit of their stories, not always following the original itinerary but taking our time to get to know some of the many souls that have travelled this path.
Schedule
Day 1
Arrive in Oulx. Transfer to Briançon, visit to the historic city - capital of the former Republic of the Escartons, walk around the old fortified village within the ancient Vauban walls and the famous Gargouille. Hotel accommodation and dinner.
Day 2
Transfer to Cervières. From there we travel to the village of La Chau (1,904 m) and continue towards Lake Noir and Lake Gignoux, also known as the "Lake of Seven Colours". The dirt road from Lake Gignoux leads down to Cime Saurel and the Rifugio Capanna Mautino mountain hut (2,100 m).
Day 3
Descent from Capanna Mautino to Bousson. Visit to the Casa delle Lapidi (Tombstone house), the museum and the town's Romanesque Church. Transfer to the Argentera Valley - Rafting down the Ripa Torrent.
Second option for the group: Descent from Capanna Mautino to Bousson. Visit as above and then transfer to Claviere to cross the longest Tibetan bridge in the world - one of the most exciting sports attractions that our valley offers. Return from the San Gervasio Gorges. Hotel accommodation in Cesana Torinese. A packed lunch will be provided
Day 4
Trekking from Cesana to Vazon and accommodation in a mountain hut. The route winds along the ancient Celtic road network and connects some of the most beautiful high-altitude villages in the Valley. A unique journey amidst nature and architecture. Dinner: Tasting menu of local products.
Day 5
Trekking from Vazon to Salbertrand, skirting Oulx. Following the Via Francigena, we enter the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Nature Park. Visit to the Colombano Romean Ecomuseum for an insight into the daily life of the alpine communities. End of the trek.
