Discovering the Routo in the Valle Stura
E-bike tour on the trails of transhumance and pastoralism
4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS
Description
The package is a 4-day adventure for those wishing to ride the ancient trails of the transhumance between the Ubaye Valley and the Stura Valley of Demonte. The whole route is travelled on low difficulty cycling itineraries, thus offering the opportunity to experience this "journey" to cyclists of all levels. The departure from France requires the cyclist to tackle the climb towards the Colle della Maddalena, which however is never demanding and provides us with a reminder of the hardships of the journey to the high mountain pastures. Once you reach the hill, on the border with Italy, the descent towards the valley begins. It features some uphill stretches where we can see the most important sheep farming locations in the Stura Valley, as far as Borgo San Dalmazzo.
The stages in the programme are rather short, so as to allow anyone to tackle them easily and, if needed, they can be extended for more experienced cyclists.
Schedule
Day 1
Meeting in Cuneo and transfer by bus to Barcelonnette, where the first day by bike begins.
We cycle towards Lausier and the Condamine-Chatelard on secondary roads. Taking the military road on the left orographic side, we reach Larche, passing it towards the “Pont Rouge” locality, at the entrance to the Parco del Mercantour, and ending up at Rifugio della Pace on the Colle della Maddalena.
Length: 37 km
Altitude difference: 1700 m
Day 2
Departure by bike downhill on asphalt towards Bersezio, from where you climb on the asphalted road towards Ferrere. Upon our arrival, we visit the Smugglers Museum, the mountain pastures and have lunch at Rifugio Becchi Rossi.
We leave again and descend to Villaggio Primavera, from where we gradually ascend to Murenz and descend to Pontebernardo, with a visit to the Ecomuseum of Pastoralism.
Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3
Departure downhill towards Pietraporzio and uphill stretch towards the Moriglione area, moving into the side valley. At Moriglione descent to Sambuco. We return on the shady side and, taking the “ex-military” road, we go up to Vinadio, have lunch and visit the area. We then continue to Aisone, where a spectacular slightly uphill path begins, leading to the chapel of the Madonna del Pino and from here, downhill to Demonte. Check-in at the hotel, visit and dinner
Length: 36 km
Altitude difference: 800 m
Day 4
Departure from Demonte downhill, crossing the Rio del Cant. The “ex-military” road is still used by those who wish to move peacefully and in the midst of nature between mountain pastures and chestnut woods, reaching as far as Moiola. From here we pass through Roccasparvera to arrive at Borgo S.Dalmazzo at lunchtime. Lunch, visit and end of the tour. To conclude the tour we can take the train from Borgo S. Dalmazzo or continue to Cuneo using the cycle paths of the Parco Fluviale.
