Highlights and tour details
The tour of Monferrato starts from the hills overlooking the Po, following Val Cerrina to the Santuario di Crea, UNESCO Heritage site and Regional Park located on one of the highest hills of Monferrato. It is also possible to take a panoramic tour of the Sacro Monte with its beautiful chapels.
Points of interest
The itinerary starts from Ca 'San Sebastiano, in Castel San Pietro, in the direction of Cantavenna which is reached by crossing the panorama of Monferrato; head for Gabiano, where you descend to the hamlet of Piagera; from there, turn left to Vallegiolitti, climbing back up the valley to the top of the mountain and then down to Murisengo. From there, follow signs for Villadeati, where we recommend taking a walk along the typical narrow streets.
From there, along a tortuous road, you reach Odalengo Piccolo. Head towards Moncalvo, the smallest town in Italy, where you can stop for a rest as you admire the historic centre. After a long climb, you climb towards Ponzano and towards the Sanctuary of Crea, declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a visit to the Sanctuary, but also the panorama of the Holy Mountain with its beautiful chapels.
From here you descend (be careful of the very steep descent) and arrive at Serralunga di Crea. Climb back up to the village and then down again to Solonghello. From there, up again to Camino, to arrive back at the starting point. (itinerary geomapped by Claudio Trombin)
