Highlights and tour details
Magnificent itinerary to travel by MTB characterised by breathtaking scenery: Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, Po Valley, Monte Rosa and the Swiss Alps.
From the Auxology Centre of Piancavallo, you reach the paved road Colle. The military road of the Cadorna Line, recently restored and characterised by unpaved section in excellent conditions, starts on the left. Continue with almost imperceptible gradients to Pian d’Arla, then to Pian Puzzo passing the so-called “Ospedaletto”. Continue going alongside the southern slope of Monte Bavarione to Passo Folungo where the military road decisively changes gradient to climb with a series of hairpin bends to the Pian Vadà Refuge, owned by the Val Grande National Park. The refuge consists of a main building which is only open on request (www.parcovalgrande.it) and a small separate building which is always open.
Return by the uphill section as far as Passo Folungo; take the road on the northern slope that goes through Archia and Pian Puzzo. Continuing on the northern slope on an unpaved forest road, you reach Pian d’Alpe from where, crossing a beech forest on an unpaved road, you reach Colle. Here, from the fountain, you can take a path towards Morissolo peak, a magnificent balcony over Lake Maggiore, to visit the fortified tunnels of Linea Cadorna. Return to Piancavallo, taking the comfortable level military road, with wonderful architectural stone elements.
